EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379
Somerled, Jarl of one-third of Orkney 1014, was a "mild and very peaceable man." He soon died (? 1015) a natural death, and Thorfinn, although Earl of Caithness and thus possessor of a full share of his fatherÃs dominions, laid claim to SomerledÃs third of Orkney. This was disputed by his half-brother Einar.
