EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379
Einar II Rangmund or Wrymouth, Jarl of one-third of Orkney 1014. He was "obstinate, cold and unfriendly; ambitious and covetous and a great warrior," and soon became unpopular with the Orkneymen, many of whom fled to Earl Thorfinn in Caithness. He was "often on war fare in the summers," and in the summer of 1018 was defeated by "Conchobar King of the Irish" at Ulfreksfiord. In the summer of 1019 Jarl Einar caught Eyvind Urarhorn, who was storm-bound at Asmundarvagr in Orkney, and killed him; whereby he gave great offence to King St. Olaf. In the autumn of 1020 he was murdered by Thorkel Amundisson "the Fosterer," while he was ThorkelĂs guest at Sandwick in Hrossey. [Complete Peerage, X:Appendix A:10]
