Athelreda of was born about 1065 in Dunbar Castle, East Lothian, Scotland. Athelreda of's father was Gospatric I Earl of Northumbria Mormaer Dunbar and her mother was Aethelreda of England. Her paternal grandparents were Maldred Lord of Carlisle & Allerdale and Aeldgyth (Edith) of Northumbria; her maternal grandfather was Edred Prince of England. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Gospatric II 1st Earl of, Waltheof Lord of, Dorothy Agnes and Gunnilda of. She was the third oldest of the five children.-
