His paternal grandparents were Nele d' Aubigny , Lord of Mowbray and Gundred de Gournay; his maternal grandparents were Walter de Walter de , Lord of Folkingham/, Sir/Gant and Matilda (Maud) de Brittany. He was an only child. He died at the age of 45 in 1191 in Acre, Palestine.General Notes

He m. Mabel, dau. of the Earl of Clare, and had issue, William, Robert, Philip, 1st of Barnbougle in Scotland, and Roger, ancestor of Mowbray, of Kirklington.
