A life-sized, canvass portrait, of Lewis Latham was painted according to experts, by Si r Peter Lely. It was brought to New England by his daughter Frances and was in the possessio n by F. A. Holden of Hyattsville, Maryland. It was purchased from Mr. Holden by the late Will iam L. Elkins, and was then in the collection of his son, the late George W. Elkins Esq., o f Phildelphia, a descendant of Lewis Latham. Lewis was descended from a junior branch of the Lathams of county Lancaster, England, an d bore the same coat of arms as the family. For many generations the Lathams exerted a powerf ul influence in the county of Lancaster.The senior branch of the family had ended with Isabel , daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Latham of Latham, who died in 1385, and wife of Sir Joh n Stanley, Knight, from whom were decended the Stanleys, Earls of Dery. The Latham estate thu s passed into another name and was long held by the Stanley family. He was married to Elizabeth (____) and they had 9 children: Frances, John, Henry, Maria , Katherine, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann (twins) and Ellen.
