Cynan Ap was born about 1004 in Aberffro, Malltraeth, Anglesey, Wales. Cynan Ap's father was Iago Ap Idwal and his mother was Afandreg Verch Gwair. His paternal grandparents were Idwal Ap Meurig and Mrs Idwal Ap Meurig; his maternal grandparents were Gwair Ap Pill and Mrs Gwair Ap Pill. He had two sisters named Crisli Verch and Tangwystl Verch. He was the second oldest of the three children. He was buried in Exiled In Dublin.General Notes
Olaf SIHTRICSON, byname (in sagas) OLAF THE RED, or OLAFCUARAN, Olafalso spelled ANLAF (d. 981?, Iona?), king of theDanish kingdoms ofNorthumbria and of Dublin. He was the son of
Sihtric, king of Deira, and was related to the Englishking
Aethelstan. When Sihtric died about 927 Aethelstan annexedDeira,and Olaf took refuge in Scotland and in Ireland until937, when he wasone of the leaders of the formidable league ofprinces that was destroyedby Aethelstan at the famous Battle of
Brunanburh. Again he sought a homeamong his kinsfolk inIreland, but just after Aethelstan's death in 940he or OlafGuthfrithson was recalled to England by the Northumbrians.Bothcrossed over, and in 941 the new English king, Edmund, gaveupDeira to the former. The peace between the English and Danesdid not,however, last long. Wulfstan, archbishop of York, sided
with Olaf; but in944 Olaf was driven from Northumbria by
Edmund, and crossing to Ireland,Olaf ruled over the Danishkingdom of Dublin. From 949 to 952 he wasagain king ofNorthumbria, until he was expelled once more (this time byErikBloodaxe), and he passed the remainder of his active life inwarfarein Ireland. But in 980 his dominion was shattered by thedefeat of theDanes at the Battle of Tara. He went to Iona,where he died probably in981, although one dubious account says
