Elias I was born in 1060 in Brimfield, Gloucestershire. Elias I's father was 1st Earl Walter "The Elder" Of Buckingham GIFFARD and his mother was Ermentrude Agnes FLAITEL. His paternal grandfather was Lord Walter DE BOLBEC; his maternal grandparents were Gerard DE FLAITEL and Herleva DE EVEREUX. He had a brother and two sisters, named Walter Of Buckingham, Rohese and Adelaide. He was the youngest of the four children.
