Matilda was born about 1088 in Halton Castle, Skipton, Yorkshire, England. Matilda's father was William I FitzNeel , of Halton,Constable Cheshire and her mother was Miss de Widness. Her paternal grandfather was Neel (Nigel) Constable of Chester; her maternal grandfather was Yarfrid Baron of Widness. She had a brother and two sisters, named William II, Albreda de and Agnes. She was the youngest of the four children.-
