Thomas was born in 1240 in Banada, Sligo, Ireland. Thomas' father was Maurice FitzGerald , 2nd Baron of Offaly and his mother was Juliane de Cogan. His paternal grandparents were Gerald FitzMaurice , 1st Baron of Offaly and Eve de Birmingham , Heiress of Offaly; his maternal grandparents were John de Cogan , Sir and Maria de Prendergast. He had a brother named Maurice "Mael". He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 31 in 1271 in Ballyloughmask, Mayo, Ireland.General Notes
