His paternal grandparents were Jarl Of Norway Ivar I Oplaendinge Halfdansson Jarl Of Norway and Miss Eysteinsdatter; his maternal grandfather was Rognvald Olafsson. He had four brothers and a sister, named Sigurd, Rognvald "The Wise", Sigurd I, Thurstan De and Swanhild. He was the second oldest of the six children.
