Cynwrig ap was born about 1175 in Tregarnedd, Llangefni, Anglesey, Wales.  Cynwrig ap's father was Ednyfed "Fychan" ap Cynwrig and his mother was Tangwystl verch Llywarch.  His paternal grandparents were Cynwrig ap Iorwerth and Angharad verch Hwfa. He had a brother named Tudor ap.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Gronwy ap and Gwenllian verch.
