Cynwrig ap was born about 1175 in Tregarnedd, Llangefni, Anglesey, Wales.  Cynwrig ap's father was Ednyfed "Fychan" ap Cynwrig and his mother was Tangwystl verch Llywarch.  His maternal grandparents were Llywarch Bran , Lord of Cummwd and Rhael verch Gronw. He had a brother named Tudor ap.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-sister named Tangwystl verch.
