Sir Gilbert Stapylton m. Agnes, dau. and co-heir of Sir Brian FitzAlan, knt. of Bedale, and by that lady acquired the lordship of Bedale, and had Brian (Sir), his heir, and Miles (Sir), of Norfolk, who m. Sir Gilbert Stapleton, the second son of Sir Miles and Sibyl, inherited the manor of Carlton (near Selby) and North Moreton, near Wallingford, Berks. His wife Agnes was one of the daughters and co-heiresses of Sir Brian Fitz Alan, Lord of Bedale, a town 10 miles north of Ripon and 1 1/2 miles from the great north road. She was therefore a member of a family with a pedigree going back to a common ancestor with the Stewart Kings. She conveyed to her husband the manors of Cotherston and Askham Brian. When her father died in 1301, he left two young daughters as joint heirs - Agnes aged 8 and Katherine 6. The wardship and marriage was entrusted to Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. Just before he died in 1310, de Lacy gave the wardship of Agnes to Sir Miles I who at once contracted her in marriage to his second son. Agnes "proved her age" at Windsor on 15 December 1317. Her sister married John Lord Grey of Rotherfield. Gilbert was King's Escheator north of the river Trent from 27 January 1320. He was summoned to parliament and presumably knighted on 15 July 1320, which was especially convened to pass sentence on the Despensers.
