Robert was born in 1170 in Tutbury Castle, Staffordshire, England.  Robert's father was Earl of Derby Walkelin (William) De Ferrers Earl of Derby and his mother was Sybil De Braose. He had a brother and three sisters, named William IV, Agatha, Millicent and Petronill.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Isabel.  He died at the age of 57 in 1227.
