Joan was born about 1176 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Joan's father was Earl Of Pembroke Richard "Strongbow" Fitzgilbert De Clare Earl Of Pembroke and her mother was Eva (Aoife) McMurrough. Her paternal grandparents were Earl of Pembroke Gilbert FitzGilbert De Clare Earl of Pembroke and Isabel Elizabeth De Beaumont; her maternal grandparents were Dermot MacMurrough King of Leinster and Mor Ingen Muirchertaig O'Toole. She had two sisters named Basilia and Isabel Fitzgilbert. She was the youngest of the three children.-
