Renaud I Sire de was born about 1100 in Courtenay, Gatinais, Isle-de-France, France.  Renaud I Sire de's father was Miles (Milo) SIre de Courtenay and his mother was Ermengarde de Nevers.  His paternal grandparents were Joscelin I (Jocelin) Sire de Courtenay and Elizabeth Isabel de Montlhery; his maternal grandparents were Renaud II Comte de Auxerre & Nevers and Ida Comtessa de Forez.  He was an only child.  He died in 1161 in Sutton Courtenay, Berkshire, England.

‌Renaud I Sire de and Hedwige du were married in a religious ceremony before 1127.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Renaud II Sire de, Gervase de and Elizabeth de.
