Walter was born about 1190 in Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Walter's father was William Comyn , 1st Earl of Buchan and his mother was Sarah FitzHugh. His paternal grandparents were Richard Comyn , Justiciar of Scotland and Hextilda of Tynedale. He had a brother named Richard. He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Alexander, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth.-
