Hawise de was born about 1089 in Clare, Suffolk, England.  Hawise de's father was Gilbert Fitz Richard de Clare , Earl Hertford and her mother was Adeliza de Claremont. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Baldwin FitzGilbert de, Richard FitzGilbert de, Gilbert de, Agnes de, Alice de, Margaret de and Rohesia de.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
