His paternal grandparents were Theobald III Comte de Blois and Alix de Crepi; his maternal grandparents were William I "The Conqueror" King of England and Matilda (Maud) of Flanders. He had two brothers and a sister, named Theobald IV Comte de, Stephen I de Blois King of and Maud de. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Emma of.
