General Notes

Edward was 2nd Generation. According to H.G. CLEVELAND'S "GENERAL MOSES CLEAVELAND" published in 1885, Edward married twice, settled in Kingston, R.I. and later moved to Canterbury, Conn.

Edward according to all traditions and fragmentary records existing migrated early in life from Woburn, went first to Marraganset Bay, Mass. and later settled at North Kingston, where evidently his children were born and recorded in the North Kingston old town record books, which were destroyed by fire 1870. About 1709 he accompanied his son Edward to Canterbury, Connecticut where his son Edward appears a proprietary inhabitant by the patent of 1710.--Larned's Windham Co. 1:156.

Edward was 58 years old when he married Zerviah Church more than four years after the death of his first wife. In his will Edward divided his large property among his wife and six children. The three youngest not being named. No children were known to have been born to Edward and Zerviah. The first 6 children were listed in his will, the last 3 were not.

Edward Cleveland lived in the North West corner of Canterbury now the South East part of Hampton; was taxed 1716 on 24 pounds. In land distribution Canterbury, April 30, 1723, he recieved 1 1/2 shares as a first settler and planter. from: The American Forebears and Some Decendents of Charles Theron Brown and His Wife Martha Elizabeth Hebbard, Michael R. There is a copy of Edward's will in the book leaving his estate to his children mentioned and his 2nd wife Zuriah.
Children Mary, George and Elizabeth were not mentioned in his will.

He purchased land [in Canterbury] 1716. Taxed 1716 in Canterbury on D35. He was not a permanent resident in 1723 as shown by his not receiving a share of public lands at the distribution of 30 Apr 1723. Admitted First Congregational Church of Canterbury 1730, Separate Society church records 28 May 1733 admitted Edward and his wife Zeruiah. They received dismissal letters in 1738 and moved to Pomfret. Edward and Zeruaih were admitted to the Old Congregational church, Pomfret, 18 Jun 1738.
