According to an article in the Genealogical and Personal Memorial of
Mercer Co unty, New Jersey, vol.2, the Cleveland family or Cleaveland
Family can trace its descent from one Thorkil, who was most likely a
Saxon landlord. About the time of the Norman conquest , he assumed
the surname of De Cliveland, calling himself Thorkil De Cliveland.
He maintained his family seat in the county of York, England. It is
from him that others of the Cleaveland and Cleveland names including
Moses [or Moyses Cleaveland] Cleveland of Ipswich, Suffolk, England
have their origin.
