Joan was born about 1180 in Wallingford, Buckinghamshire, England.  Joan's father was (Baron Wallingford) Thurston Basset (Baron Wallingford) and her mother was Mrs-Thurston Basset. She had a brother and five sisters, named Richard, Isabel, Egilina, Alice, Matilda and Laurencia.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
