John I de was born about 1212 in Barnard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  John I de's father was Hugh de Baliol , Lord Gainford and his mother was Cicely de Fontaines.  His paternal grandparents were Eustace de Baliol and Petronella FitzPiers; his maternal grandparents were Aleaume Seigneur de Longpre & Fontaines and Laurette de St. Valery. He had two sisters named Ada de and Tiphaine (Theopharica) de.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died on October 12th, 1269 in Barnard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  He was buried in Sweetheart Abbey, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

‌John I de and Devorgilla of were married in a religious ceremony in 1233 in Galloway, Scotland.  They had three sons and four daughters, named Alexander, John II de, William de, Cecily de, Eleanor (Alianora) de, Ada de and Euphemia.
