His paternal grandparents were King Edgar (The Peaceable) of England and Queen Elfrida Ealdorman; his maternal grandparents were Duke Richard (The Fearless) de Normandy and Duchess Gunnora de Crepon. He had a brother and two sisters, named King Edward III :The Confessor", Alfred and Princess Godgifu (Goda). He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named King Edmund "Ironside" and Princess Aelfgifu.-
