Thomas was born in 1743 in Chatham Co., NC. Thomas' father was Thomas West and his mother was Catherine Rebecca Easting. His paternal grandparents were Thomas West and Esther Unknown. He had twelve brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Ignatius, William, Phillip, John, Jesse, Charles, Walter, Berry, Isaac, Robert, Rutherford, Mary Dicea and Elizabeth 'Betsy'.
