His paternal grandparents were Joseph Fritts and Anna Aller; his maternal grandparents were Archibald Hoffman and Mary Cregar (Krieger). He had four brothers and two sisters, named Archibald H., John, Alvin Arthur, James C., Mary H. and Anna A.. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
