Nelse J. was born in 1843 in Luster, Sogn Og Fjordane Co., Norway.1   Nelse J.'s father was Jens Nilson Ottum and his mother was Ollegaard Nilsdatter Talle.  His paternal grandparents were Nils Jenssen Ottum and Ingrid Jakobsdatter Bringe; his maternal grandparents were Nils Nilssen Talle and Susanna Christophersdatter Nee Kjorlaug Nitter. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Jacob, Peder, Inger Jensdatter and Caroline. He had a half-sister named Susanna K..1
