Mary Anne was born in 1864 in Long Bank, Stafford, England. Mary Anne's father was James Griffith and her mother was Sarah Child. Her maternal grandparents were John Child and Mrs. Sarah Child. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Samuel Griffith, James, Ruth, Elizabeth, Sarah Anne, Anne, Jane and Agnes. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
