His paternal grandparents were Francisco Amaral Ferreira and Maria de Gloria Serpa; his maternal grandparents were Peter Morris Cornell and Margaret E. Kelley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John Elmer, George Albert, Augustine C., Harold A., Rosa Lucida, Cecilia Margaret, Julia Alice and Veronica Alma. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 85 on January 24th, 1984 in Contra Costa County, California.
