William was born about 1331 in Crawford,Clydesdale,Lanarkshire,Scotland. William's father was Lord David Lindsay Of Crawford and his mother was Heiress Mary Abernethy. His maternal grandfather was Lord Alexander Abernethy. He had two brothers named James and Alexander. He was the youngest of the three children.
