Her paternal grandparents were Laird Norman Leslie and Elizabeth Leith; her maternal grandfather was Lord Alexander Abernethy. She had a brother named Walter. She was the older of the two children. Some lines put Margaret as daughter of Walter Leslie, Earl of Ross & Euphemia Countess of Ross. However, according to Burke's Peerage, they were not married until 13 Sep 1365, which would put Margaret's birth about 1380 or later (only about 60 or more years too young to have married William).
