Gilbert was born about 1180. Gilbert's father was Richard De Clare and his mother was Countess Amice De Meullent Of Gloucester. His paternal grandparents were Roger De Clare and Maud De St Hillary; his maternal grandfather was Robert De Meullent. He had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Maud.
