Bernard I was born about 0940.  Bernard I's father was Duke  Herman Billung Of Saxony and his mother was Hildegarde De Westerbourge.  His paternal grandparents were Count Billung De Thuringia and Alda (Athalia) De Italy. He had four sisters named Matilda, Schwanhilde, Bertha and Oda.
