Mary Ann was born in 1831 in Ohio.1 Mary Ann's father was William Nelson and her mother was Ginsey Jane Russell. Her maternal grandparents were John Russell and Hannah "Patience" Rankin. She had a brother and three sisters, named John, Eliza I., Armenia and Jemima. She was the oldest of the five children.-
