Catherine was born in 1801 in Washington Co,VA. Catherine's father was John Rowland and her mother was Eleanor Remy. Her paternal grandparents were John Rowland and Mary UNKNOWN; her maternal grandparents were William Remy and Eleanor McCarty. She had seven brothers named Michael, Rememberance, Ryland, Santford Sanphred Roland, Daniel R, John and Armsted. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Armsted and Catherine.-
