Frances never married. Upon the death of her father Hugh, the other heirs agreed to allow her to stay at the homestead and manage the farm of about 100 acres. She had the use of one slave woman. By 1853, she was 80 years old, and she now had 19 slaves. Her heirs were afraid she was going to release the slaves upon her death, so they tried to get her declared incompetent. The suit was dismisssed.
