Her paternal grandparents were William Woodford and Ann Maria Archer; her maternal grandfather was William Buckner. She had five brothers and three sisters, named William T. Buckner, John T., Thomas Catsby, Henry C., Benjamin W., Mary L., Elizabeth Hawes and Maria A.. She was the oldest of the nine children.-
