Elbert S. was born about 1846 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.1 Elbert S.'s father was Drury Ward and his mother was Elizabeth Prater. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Stephen, Cyrus, Simon Peter, Melvina Jane and Martha R.. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
