James was born in 1874 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 James' father was Robert Spires Or Spears and his mother was Elizabeth Bentley. His paternal grandparents were Gillam Spires Or Spears and Elizabeth Everhart; his maternal grandparents were William Bentley and Anna Wells. He had two brothers and a sister, named Crocket, John and Ann. He was the oldest of the four children.-
