John Blessing was born on January 7th, 1824 in Washington County, Virginia.1 John Blessing's father was Arthur B. Byars and his mother was Susannah Blessing. His maternal grandparents were Jacob Blessing and Elizabeth Messersmith. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William Bown, Arthur Henderson, Samuel A., Henry Clay, Thomas Foy, Adaline Batie, Ann Elizabeth, Sarah Sophia and Mary C.. He was the second oldest of the ten children.-
