Joseph was born in 1825 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Joseph's father was Alexander Skelton and his mother was Susannah Dollins. His paternal grandparents were John Skelton and Elizabeth Roberts. He had two brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Lewis and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the four children.-
