Mary was born in 1828 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary's father was Jacob Simon Or Simmons and her mother was Elizabeth Loudermilch. Her paternal grandparents were Christian Simon Or Simmons and Catherine Amend Or Ammons; her maternal grandfather was Loudermilch. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Christian, Jacob, John, Catherine and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the six children.
