His paternal grandparents were Michael Shanks and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Christian Pearson and Catherine. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Christian, John, Michael, Catherine Or Catey and Elizabeth. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Michael, John and Elizabeth.-
