Sarah Jane was born in 1853 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Sarah Jane's father was John G. Payne and her mother was Melinda Gillenwater. Her maternal grandparents were Elijah C. Gillenwater and Rebecca Snodgrass. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Elijah, William F., Joseph S., Rebecca A. and Victoria. She was the second youngest of the six children. She had two half-brothers named John G. and Provost.-
