John was born about 1745 in Virginia.1 John's father was Josias Payne and his mother was Anne Fleming. His paternal grandparents were George Payne and Mary Woodson; his maternal grandparents were Charles Fleming and Susannah Tarleton. He had two brothers named Josias and Robert.
