Her maternal grandparents were George Cresswell and Statirah McCreery. She had three brothers and three sisters, named George Hartwell, Frederick, Ferdinand, Mary Frances Louisa, Nancy Catherine Elizabeth and Eda Jane. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
