His paternal grandfather was Hugh Miller; his maternal grandparents were Henry Ewalt and Elizabeth Frye. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Hugh, Henry, William H., Mary Or Polly, Elizabeth and Margaret J.. He was the third youngest of the seven children.-
