Her paternal grandparents were William McCarty and Rachel Kyle; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Galbraith and Elizabeth Laughlin. She had a brother and a sister, named J. A. and Laura. She was the second oldest of the three children. She had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named William, Andrew, Robert, Isaac A., Victoria, Margaret, Rachel, Mary and Lilly.-
