Gilbert was born about 1196 in of, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales and his baptism took place in 1203 in ,St. David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales.1 Gilbert's father was William Marshall and his mother was Isabel Fitzgilbert De CLARE. His paternal grandparents were John "The Marshall" Fitzgilbert and Sibilla (Sibyl) De SALISBURY; his maternal grandparents were Richard "Strongbow" Fitzgilbert CLARE and Eva (Aoife) MCMURROUGH. He had four brothers and six sisters, named William, Richard, Anselm, Walter, Margaret, Maud (Matilda), Eve, Joane, Isabel and Sibyl. He died on June 27th, 1241 in ,Hertford, Hertfordshire, England.
