Joseph was born on June 15th, 1883 in Fletcher, Jefferson, Missouri.1 Joseph's father was Elijah M. Manis and his mother was Mercenia Stuthers Pressley. His paternal grandparents were Elijah Manis and Agnes Anderson. He had three half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named William Riley, John Tiger, Daniel Jackson, Elizabeth Ann, Nancy Jane, Amelia, Lucy, Margaret, Mary Martha, Caroline and Mary Sarah.-
